Lamoni, IA- It's been a rough stretch of games for the men's soccer team, but after tonight's performance it appears they can put that behind them and look to a promising second half. In the last five games the Jackets have been decimated by injury, had some bad luck and struggled technically to get their game in sync. It finally all came together Tuesday night and just at the right time as the Jackets dominated rival William Jewell, winning 2-0.
Graceland was determined to jump out to an early lead in Tuesday nights game, and jump out to a lead they would. Roger Thompson (Brampton, Ontario) drilled a shot to the back of the net in the 13th minute on a free kick sending Graceland out in front, 1-0. GU would take that lead into the locker room and it would remain that way until the midway point of the 2nd half. Junior Kasey Kiarash (Toronto, Ontario) was able to score, striking one into the upper right hand corner, on a shot that ricocheted off teammate Hunter Re' (Overland Park, KS). The shot salted the game away, 2-0 in the 60th minute. The Jacket defensive line was extremely stingy on the night led by junior Orrin Branker (Point Fortin, Trinidad & Tobago) and sophomore Grant Webster (Indianola, IA) in the shutout.
"It feels really good to get the monkey off of our back and get that win," stated an elated Coach Monroy after the contest. "After the way we played tonight, it's clear we've turned the corner and we are headed in the right direction. When our defense plays like they did tonight, we're an entirely different team, we feed off of that. They played exceptional tonight and if we continue to get that type of play from them, this team can do very good things," finished Monroy.
It's a short break for Graceland now as they'll practice tomorrow and then head to Fayette, Missouri Thursday for a conference match with the Central Methodist Eagles at 7pm. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the men's soccer team and all of Jacket athletics.
