Lamoni, IA-The Graceland men's soccer team has hit the proverbial wall in the last few weeks. After starting out the season a very promising 3-0 including wins against NCAA Division I Western Illinois and then #12 Bellevue University, Graceland has lost three of four including today's disappointing 2-1 loss at the hands of the Ashford University Saints.
The game didn't start well for the Jackets as they gave up two early first half goals to the Saints and quickly fell behind, 2-0. Senior forward Jeffrey Darkwah (Brampton, Ontario) was able to get Graceland back within one when he found the back of the net in the 28th minute on a nice assist from Eddie Edward (Ottawa, Ontario). It would remain that way through halftime and into the second half. Despite Graceland's efforts to load the front line they were unable to tally the game tying goal and the Jackets would eventually fall, 2-1.
"Today was really disappointing," stated Coach Monroy following the loss. "We've really been bit by the injury bug of late but that is far from an excuse for losing on your home field like this. Ashford came into this game extremely well prepared and ready to play. They brought their "A" game and we neglected to match their intensity. From here we focus on getting healthy, move forward and prepare for a very difficult conference season ahead of us. This team has plenty of talent, we've just got to be able to get that transfer to our play," finished Monroy.
Graceland now stands at 4-3 overall and 1-0 in HAAC play. The Jackets next face the Missouri Valley Vikings Saturday afternoon in Marshall, Missouri in a 3:00 pm matchup. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the men's soccer team and all of Jacket athletics.
