Canton, MO-The Graceland men's soccer team defeated the Culver-Stockton side 5-1 on Friday in a good evening for the offense. Hunter Re' (Overland Park, KS) had a hat trick for the Jackets, who played their way to a convincing victory on a rough, wet field.
Graceland went up 3-0 at half on the strength of two goals by Re' and a brilliant second effort score by senior midfielder Brian Loving (St. Joseph, MO) off of a corner kick.
Re' scored his third goal five minutes into the second period to take the Jackets to a 4-0 lead, which stood until Culver-Stockton scored in the 66th minute to end the shutout. Jeffrey Darkwah put the ball in the net with a little over two minutes left to extend Graceland's lead back to four.
The defense was solid around standout keeper Carlos Ortiz (Bogota, Colombia) in the first half and junior Gage Tubbs (Raytown, MO) in the second, allowing only two shots on goal, both of which came against Tubbs in the second half.
"This was a good way to start conference play," said Coach Angel Monroy. "We still have some work to do with finishing, because there were several opportunities we didn't capitalize on. It was also nice to have Hunter [Re'] and Jeffery [Darkwah] back with the team today. Brian Loving did a great job with the goal on the corner, and really went above and beyond with extra effort on that play," he added, commenting upon the offense. Coach Monroy finished by noting that: "It was a rough, wet field tonight, and we dealt with the surface really well in playing on it."
Graceland improves to 4-2 on the season, and next plays Ashford University, who as Coach Monroy noted after the game, is currently undefeated. That game will be on Sunday, September 27th in Lamoni, the starting time being 3:00pm.
