Lamoni, IA-The men's soccer team lost a very competitive contest 0-2 to #14 Park University tonight in late night match in Lamoni. The Jackets were neck and neck with the Pirates for the entire first period, and only faltered briefly in the middle of the second. The short burst of play was enough for the Pirates to score twice, and in the subsequent minutes Graceland was unable to catch them.
Both teams managed only three shots on goal in the first period, a testament to the hard-nosed defensive play which both sides displayed. The second period saw some increase in the offensive output, but it was not until the middle portion of that half that Park punctuated the action with two goals. The scores came in minutes 64 and 80. In attempt to counter the first of these, Graceland stacked their front line, inserting three forwards- Diego Gonzalez (Brampton, ON), Hunter Re (Overland Park, Kansas) and Jeffrey Darkwah (Brampton, ON), but were unable to even the score. The Pirates instead tacked on a second goal, all but ending Graceland's rally attempt.
"Park was a very good team, and they handed us our first loss at home in three years," said Coach Angel Monroy. "In contrast to Saturday's loss, I felt that tonight, the guys worked hard all game and we just could not get a shot to go." Coach Monroy concluded his remarks by saying that "From here forward, we just have to get healthy and prepare for our next opponent; there is still a lot of season ahead of us."
