Lamoni, IA-The Graceland women's soccer team defeated #13 Park University (4-1-2) in overtime to win 1-0. The Yellowjackets showed their true colors in the home opener by defeating the Pirates, handing them their first loss on the season.
Graceland dominated in most offensive categories, taking 28 shots (11 on goal) to Park's 5 (3 on goal) and, of course, took the only point of the evening eight and a half minutes into overtime. Junior Chelsea Phillips (Granada Hills, CA) struck the game-winning shot with the assist from Junior Midfielder Shay Eskridge (Rowlett, TX) to finish breaking in the home turf for 2009.
Goalkeeper Leslie Danner (Raytown, MO) had a relatively quiet evening as Graceland once again showed excellent defense. The Jacket backfield dominated the Pirate's probes on offense before they became serious, and the senior Danner was herself able to cleanly defend Park's three attempts on her net.
Coach Wagenaar said "This win shows Graceland belongs near the Top 10. Graceland had mysteriously fallen 23 places without giving up a loss, but this win should bring us back."
Graceland improves to 5-1-2 on the season, and next faces conference opponent Culver-Stockton on Friday, September 25 at 2:00pm in Canton, MO. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the women's soccer team and all of Jacket athletics.
