Columbia, KY-The Jacket offense was too much for scrappy Trinity Christian to open the Lindsey Wilson tourney in Columbia, Kentucky. #23 Graceland let it's feet do the talking Friday evening to beat the Trolls 4-3.
The offensive breakout could not have come at a better time, as the normally stalwart GU defense gave up three opposing goals to the Trinity side, who started the year in the NAIA Top Ten.
The Jacket attack caught fire early and stuck two in the net to start the contest off right. The gallery was to get it's money's worth, however, as the Trolls injected some sport back into the action by fighting back to a 2-2 tie.
Not to be outdone by their opponents, the Graceland women came back with a second helping of offense, and ran the scoreboard to 4-2. Another late goal by Trinity Christian gave hope to a rally but, in the end, resistance proved to be futile as the Jackets refused to be denied their well-earned victory.
Head Coach Fred Wagenaar was full of praise for the team's achievement: "Despite a 3 am arrival the night before, Graceland came out flying," he said. "A tough and determined Trinity Christian team fought back to tie. We scored another two quick goals, showing that the offense is really starting to click. The Trinity keeper made a great save to prevent what would have been a fifth goal. We are growing stronger with every game," said Coach Wagenaar with approval.
The Jackets, now 4-0-2 after the win, take on #4 Lindsay Wilson College tomorrow evening at 7 pm. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the women's soccer team and all of Jacket athletics.
