Lamoni, IA-The women's volleyball team lost an extremely close contested match Tuesday night at the Closson Center.
Graceland (7-4), despite a plucky and sometimes spectacular resistance, was unable to overtake the Wildcats, who outlasted the Jacket women in four games.
While the offense petered out in the first game after a lightening quick start of two-nil, the GU squad managed a brilliant rally late in the game. The Jackets were unable to surmount the early deficit, however, but caused extra play before they fell 28-26. The story was much the same for the second game, where the Jackets fought adamantly and forced the issue well beyond Baker's comfort before losing a 30-28 heartbreaker.
Undaunted, Graceland refused to call it a night and took the third game from Baker 25-21, showcasing the barnstorming airborne attack that has thus far served them so well this campaign. But the Wildcats managed to staunch the bleeding and take the last match 25-19, denying their hosts' rally just as it was making it from the starting gate.
"We knew Baker was an excellent team," said Coach Stew McDole. "Our focus was to execute at our level and better. I think we absolutely did that for at least 3 games. A tiny break at a couple of spots and we might have won the first three games," he noted. Coach McDole concluded: "We are a team that thrives on good ball control, great serving and spontaneous offence. Most of the night that was there. I like us a lot. This team has a lot of wins in its future."
The Jackets travel to Fayette, MO Saturday, September 19 to take on Central Methodist. Game time is 3:30pm; stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the women's volleyball team and all of Jacket athletics.
