Des Moines, IA-The #13 ranked Jacket men's soccer team faced their toughest opponent of the young season Wednesday night in Des Moines. Taking on the Vikings of Grand View University, it took until the 106th minute before the first goal of the match by either team.
Following a very physical first half in which the Vikings controlled the game but were unable to tally a mark, Graceland came out in the second half and asserted themselves in the contest. Still, through 90 minutes neither team was able to find the back of the net and the game went into overtime. The first overtime remained scoreless giving the Jackets 10 minutes in the final overtime to try and avoid a tie or a loss. Graceland's persistent play payed off however as freshman Roger Thompson (Brampton, Ontario) found the back of the net on a beautiful assist from sophomore Aaron Cairns (Glasgow, Scotland) inside the box in the 106th minute. The goal sent the Jacket team and traveling faithful into a frenzy and also gave the Jackets a 1-0 double overtime win.
Senior sensation and all-american keeper Carlos Ortiz (Bogota, Colombia) had a career night at the net continuing his scoreless streak up to three games. Along with Ortiz, the entire Jacket defense has yet to be scored on in the season outscoring their opponents a dominating 8-0 in their three games. Aaron Cairns was fantastic controlling the middle of the field and freshman Andre Sharpe (Kingston, Jamaica) continued to play well for GU.
"Grand View is a really, really good team," stated Coach Monroy following the win. "Every time we play these guys they bring a physical nature to the game that makes it tough to score. They are extremely well coached and consistently in the national rankings, deservedly so. We're a little banged up now so the next 10 days off will really help us heal up for our matchup in Kansas City against Kansas Wesleyan next week.
Tonight's win sends the Jackets to 3-0-0 overall. They'll next face Kansas Weselyan at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, KS at 3pm Saturday, September, 19th.
