HAAC Tournament
Indian Foothills GC
Marshall, MO-Senior Christy Everett (Aurora, IL) will always remember the last hole of her college career at the Heart of America Conference Tournament. She faced a difficult 335 yard par 4 with out of bounds down both sides of the fairway. After Everett hit her tee shot to the left rough, she placed a perfect iron shot to within 25 feet of the cup and sank the putt for a birdie. The rest of the team erupted in cheers and congratulated Christy on an excellent Graceland golf career. "When Christy first talked to me about playing golf she did not seem too excited. However, she quickly became an excellent addition to the team and I have seen significant improvement in her game over the past few years. It has been a privilege to have her on the team," stated Coach Brunner.
The tournament was hosted by Missouri Valley College on the 5833 yard par 72 Indian Foothills golf course in Marshall, Missouri. The first day concluded with rain and washing out the scores. All of the Yellowjacket golfers had just completed their first nine holes when the horn blew to clear the course. Some of the other teams had only completed 5 holes. "Quite honestly, it was good the siren blew as we were not playing that well," remarked Coach Brunner. The storm brought rain, lightning and thunder and play could not be finished. The tournament committee ruled to throw out all the scores for the first day and make the event an 18 hole event to played the second day.
The weather the second day was much nicer; however, the soggy course did not make for easy scoring conditions. Junior Krista Woodend (Woodstock, ONT) led the Yellowjackets team with an 89 and finished 10th in the 33 player field of golfers. The medalist score for the day was 76. Krista was followed by Christy Everett who shot 92, while Freshmen Carolina Fonseca (Bogota, Colombia) scored a steady 96, and Sophomore Kelsey Booth (Parkville, MO) fired a solid 116 for a team total of 393 that placed the Jackets in 5th place in the seven team event. "The ladies deserve a pat on the back for their effort. The season has been hampered by snow and rain and they preserved through it all," commented Coach Brunner. "Next year we will look to improve our 5th place finish and take the team to another level. I hope there will be several new recruits to fill in where Christy has left off."
The lady Yellowjackets now look forward to the fall 2009 season.
