Springfield, MO-The temperature dropped, the wind increased and the scoring ballooned. The spring opener for the Men's golf team was played in Springfield, Missouri, in less than ideal conditions. The temperature was in the high 40s but the wind chill was below freezing. With the potential for even poorer conditions on the second day of the tournament, the tournament director decided to play 36 holes in one day.
"It seems like every spring season opener is played in difficult conditions and this year was no different. Our scores were high but the effort was good," stated Coach Brunner. "I know these guys are capable of playing better golf and I believe by the time the conference tournament comes in May they will be ready."
The Yellowjackets finished tied for 7th in the 9 team field with 343-336 for a 679 total over the 36 holes. Leading the Jackets was Junior Adam Craig (Stouffville, ONT) with 86-82 (168). None of the Yellowjackets were able to break into the 70s but they look to improve as the season progresses. Individual scores were: Sophomore Matt Mickelson (Lamoni, IA) 84-89 (173), Freshmen Tim Redding (Grand River, IA) 89-82 (171), Sophomore Brad Miller (Three Oaks, MI) 87-83 (170), and Freshmen Trent Ranney 86-91 (177). The second team individual scores were: Junior Sam Chester (Phoenix, AZ) 84-93 (177), Freshmen Greg Bolte (Shenandoah, IA) 92-92 (184), Freshmen Jesse Still (Mt. Ayr, IA) 94-95 (189), Junior Brock Goodman (Lathrop, MO) withdrew because of a knee injury, and Freshmen Mikhail Ziskos (East York, ONT) 86-87 (173).
Next tournament is the William Jewell Invitational on April 9.
