Des Moines, IA-Head Women's Basketball Coach Opie Butler has announced the signing of high-profile East High School Scarlet small forward Sara Wagner. Wagner, a three year starter in the prestigious Des Moines Metro League led the metro in scoring during the 2007-2008 campaign averaging 15.5 ppg. This year as a dominant small forward on the #4 ranked team in class 4A, Wagner is focused on winning a state championship at East before her playing days will begin at Graceland.
During high school Sara has received many accolades from both her athletic achievements on the court as well as her academic performance in the classroom. Wagner is a three time all-conference performer in the CIML including first team all-conference during the 2007-2008 season. She was also selected last year on the coaches all-district team for the southwest district. This year, Sara has been named a nominee for the 2009 McDonald's All-American game to be played in late March. On top of excelling on the basketball court, Sara is an outstanding student. During the last two seasons she has been honored by the CIML with all-academic recognition for her achievements in the classroom.
"A player like Sara will have an instant impact on Yellowjacket basketball next season," stated Head Coach Opie Butler. "She is a very fundamentally sound basketball player with outstanding shooting skills. Sara will be an ideal fit for our program and will be an extremely important cog in what we are building here with women's basketball. It's great for our program to get an Iowa student athlete with the qualities that Sara will bring both on and off the court. I'm excited to get her on campus and it's going to be great to see her grow over the next four years both as a player and as an individual," finished Coach Butler.
The entire Graceland community is excited to see Sara on campus next fall!
