Kansas City, MO-The men's soccer team was back in action Friday afternoon after their 1-1 doublr OT tie Tuesday against Benedictine. Graceland was in Kansas City taking on conference opponent Avila University. The Jackets would give up their only goal of the game in the first five minutes of play, but dominated the last 85 putting the Eagles away 5-1.
Avila would get on the board with an early goal in a game that would see much offense. Their lead however was short lived. Junior transfer Jeffrey Darkwah (Brampton, Ontario) would put back to back goals into the net erasing Avila's 1-0 lead giving the Jackets a 2-1 advantage. Graceland was far from done scoring however. Freshman Aaron Cairns (Glasgow, Scotland) made his first start of the year a memorable one also scoring twice (both in the first half) giving the Jackets a very comfortable lead at 4-1 going into the locker room. The second half would continue on as the first as the Jackets tacked on a final goal by Matt Klaus (Kearney, MO) on a penalty kick capping the score at 5-1. Graceland got an all around great effort by the team today both from the starters and off the bench. Jair Reyna (Matamoros, Mexico) had his best game of the season as well on the afternoon.
"All season long we've played with our opponents and really haven't been out played with the exception of one half," stated Coach Monroy following the win. "Today we finally put a team away. After they got the early lead we went on the attack right away and showed no fear. It's exciting for us to finally feel like we're coming together. We've got the talent to be an excellent team, if we continue to put teams away like we did today this team can be really good," concluded Monroy.
The Jackets will play a makeup game Tuesday evening back in Lamoni. Graceland will host Truman State at 6:00 pm at the Rasmussen Sports Complex. Stay in tuned to the Jacket website for continuing updates on the Graceland men's soccer team and all of Jacket athletics.
