Lamoni, IA-The Yellowjacket football team was back at home Saturday night in action against the Avila Eagles. Graceland came into the ball game at 0-3 and Avila came in at 1-2 so both teams knew they would be in for a battle. A battle is what they got. The Eagles defeated the Jackets 9-8 the difference coming late in the fourth quarter on the only touchdown of the game by the Eagles.
The Jackets started the scoring first getting a 45 yard field goal out of star kicker Luis Villagomez (San Diego, CA) with 4:26 remaining in the second quarter. Just over a minute later the Eagles miss handled a high snap and kicked it through the back of the end zone giving the Jackets an unorthodox 5-0 lead on the safety heading into the half.
The score would remain that way until the 1:26 mark in the third when Eagle kicker Andrew Korth banged a 26 yard field goal through the uprights cutting the Jacket lead to 5-3. Jacket kicker Villagomez would tack on another field goal at the 12:26 mark giving Graceland an 8-3 advantage. That however, would be it for the Jackets. Taking advantage of good field position and a couple of big plays, Avila would drive down the field late in the fourth and punch in the only touchdown by either team in the game at the 5:20 mark in the fourth. Avila scored on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Marc Benavides to Doug Wendel to cap the drive. The Eagles would fail on the two point conversion but the touchdown would give them a 9-8 lead. Graceland did have one more shot at it late in the fourth but Villagomez was unable to hit on a long field goal hitting the right upright salting away the win for Avila.
The Jackets now stand at 0-4 overall and 0-4 in the HAAC. They'll travel to Baker University next Saturday to face the Wildcats at their homecoming. Kickoff is set for 2pm.
