Parkville, MO-After a rain out a couple of weekends ago Graceland, finally got to face Park in their much anticipated match up of ranked foes. Undefeated at 6-0 coming into the game, the Jackets knew this game would be their toughest test yet. The Pirates are the first ranked opponent Graceland has faced this season and the Jackets would not disappoint, defeating the Pirates 2-1.
The scoring started for Graceland first as sophomore Lindi Spilchen (North Bay, Ontario) scored in her second straight game giving the Jackets a 1-0 lead. It would be very short lived however. Only forty-nine seconds later Park's Ivy Chapin came right back with a goal to tie the game up 1-1. It would remain that way through halftime and into the second half until the 66th minute when freshman phenom Karina Vega (Asuncion, Paraguay) scored off of a free kick giving Graceland their final score and the game winner.
"We played a very highly skilled Park team tonight," stated Coach Wagenaar following the big win. "We had to make some adjustments at halftime as we changed two midfielders and a back in order to give us a more defensive structure. Our pressure eventually got to them and allowed us to score the game winning goal," continued Wagenaar. "It's great to get these preseason wins and heading into conference play I like where we stand. Saturday should be exciting again against Central Methodist as we open conference play," concluded Coach Wagenaar.
The Jackets will open conference play this Saturday afternoon against the Central Methodist Eagles. Play is set to begin at 1pm at the Rasmussen Sports Complex. Stay in tuned to the Graceland athletics website for continuing coverage on the women's soccer team and all of Graceland athletics.
