Graceland came up with a big conference win Monday night, defeating Avila University 93-82 at the Closson Center. This was a huge win for the Jackets, who are now currently in the HAAC playoffs. Their overall record improves to 9-16 and are 5-11 in the conference. Freshmen sensation Mike Malat had a monster game, scorching the net for 33 points along with 9 assists and 8 rebounds. The big man Simon Morefield had a nice showing as well, putting in 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Jackets started off hot and never looked back, playing with high energy and intensity. The team shot 42% from the 3-point line and had a nine point lead at halftime. The second half was quite a scene, capped by Simon Morefield's monster slam with 10:00 to play. "Our offense was a big factor tonight," said Coach Quinn following the game. "The only thing that really held us back offensively was turnovers. The guys continue to improve at closing out ball games when earlier in the season we wouldn't be winning these close games. We've gotten ourselves into playoff contention coming down the stretch. Thursday night will be another big conference game but at this point in the season they all are," he concluded.
The next game for the Jackets is a big one when they host their rival William Jewell College. The game starts at 7:30 and should be a thrilling matchup as the Jackets look to continue to win big games.
