On Saturday, February 2nd the Graceland Men’s Tennis (2-0) team traveled to Pella, Iowa for a tri-match season opener against NCAA Division III Central College (1-3) and Cornell College (0-2). Central College defeated Cornell 9-0 in the third match of the day. It was a strong effort for the Yellowjackets who dominated the court throughout their two matches. Defeating Cornell by a score of 8-1 and Central 9-0, the Yellowjackets were led by junior Thomas Brodbeck (Cerny, France), freshman Miguel Lopez (Irapuato, Mexico), and freshman Daniel Ramirez (Leon, Mexico).
“I was very pleased with their performance [Lopez and Ramirez],” Coach Jerry Hampton said. “I expected our veterans to perform and they came through for us.” The strong duo of juniors Brett Waite (St. Louis, MO) and Carlos Cordova (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) provided the answer in doubles match ups against Central and Cornell. Lopez and Ramirez also performed well paired together. Brodbeck and freshmen Remy Caffardo (Romans, France) sealed an undefeated day for the Yellowjacket duos. class="MsoNormal">
“I felt that we were in better condition than I initially thought this early in the season,” Hampton said. The Men’s tennis team heads to Grinnell, IA this Saturday February 10 for a single match against NCAA Division III foe Grinnell College. The Lady Yellowjackets open play in two weeks, February 22nd, against the NCAA Division II University of Nebraska-Omaha in Omaha, NE.
