Graceland Defeats #7 William Jewell 2-1

Lamoni, IA- Women's soccer had been anticipating tonight’s game with rival William Jewell College for a while. Coming into tonight Jewell was ranked # 7 in the NAIA polls. Both teams were undefeated in conference play at 5-0.

In the first half of play Graceland seemed to be off the pace. William Jewell controlled the tempo of the game and was physically out playing Graceland. With only eleven minutes left in the first half, Lindsey Comley (Smithville, ONT) scored the Yellowjackets first goal. There was a burst of energy and the pace picked up. Just as soon as Graceland picked up play the Cardinals scored with only six minutes remaining. There were very few first half shots on goal from either team. It seemed William Jewell controlled ball time as well as the tempo and Graceland would have to take charge if they wanted the win.

In the second half Graceland made a few adjustments and picked up right where they left off in the first half. They played energized right from the whistle and did not give up. Graceland took more control of the ball time and threatened to score on several more occasions then the first half. With 30 minutes remaining in the second half Shay Eskridge (Rowlett, TX) had a great header from 30 feet out to give Graceland the lead. It would remain 2-1 for the rest of the game as Graceland pressured Jewell and kept the Cardinals from scoring field position. Graceland will face Benedictine College next Wednesday the 24th at 2:00pm.
