Playing three starters down on Thursday night, two of them being 1st team All-HAAC performers, was not going to be an easy mountain for the Jackets to climb. Especially on the stage they were playing on. Graceland was playing for their first ever Region V Championship and an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament. In front of an absolutely packed and rocking crowd, the Jackets pulled off a fantastic win, 4-3 on penalty kicks.

In a game where it never really felt like either team controlled the tempo, it was fast paced up and down the field and full of great defensive play. The Jackets really used their defensive speed to their advantage tonight not allowing Benedictine to have clean shots on goal. As the game went back and forth and remained 0-0 through regulation, you really began to feel this game may be determined by penalty kicks. Something the Jackets are very experienced at. Graceland won the National Championship last year in a penalty kick shootout. That experience would pay off in a big way. Through two overtimes and still a scoreless game, it was headed for a shoot-out. Benedictine would be up first and they missed their first attempt. The Jackets converted on their first three, and the Ravens countered scoring on tries 2-4. Graceland missed their fourth attempt which tied the game at 3-3. Since it’s best of 5, it would come down to one more chance for each team. Benedictine would miss their 5th attempt as it ricocheted off the crossbar and fell short. The Jackets would capitalize on their fifth for the unbelievable victory.

As the celebration ensued all around, a tip of the hat to the Benedictine Ravens was in store. As both teams met at the middle of the field for the traditional handshake, it held a little different meaning for all. Benedictine was a very formidable foe, and should hold their heads high for the great battle.

“What an amazing team effort tonight missing three starters,” Coach Joseph said following the win. “We came together when we needed it. Everyone had to step up their games being three men down and they did. That and our experience late in the game is what pulled us through,” Coach Joseph concluded with.

Graceland will now have the opportunity to defend their National Championship at the NAIA tournament next week in Olathe, KS. The tournament is scheduled for November 14-20th with opponent and times to be determined. Stay closely in tuned to the Jacket athletic website for the NAIA Championship field announcement.
