Offense Sputters, Jackets Drop Finale

Springfield, MO- After losing last weekend in their final home game of the season, the Jackets had to make their longest trip of the year Saturday to play the Evangel Crusaders in their season finale. Graceland played well defensively again, but would struggle to get much going offensively losing 19-17.

Evangel got on the board first on a 37 yard field goal taking a 3-0 lead on their first drive of the day. Following the Jackets first drive a punt would ensue that would arguably be Stuarts best of the year. Sophomore Zach Stuart punted the ball inside the one yard line and on the next play the Jacket defense came up with a safety (their first of the year) and the only points Graceland would score in the first half. The Crusaders added a touchdown in the first half following a Jackets turnover but missed on the extra point making the halftime score 9-2.

In the second half Evangel would score first again on a 52 yard field goal before Graceland would answer with a field goal of their own making it 12-5. Late in the third quarter the Crusaders would score their final touchdown of the game on a long pass putting them up 19-5. The Jackets would counter with two touchdowns of their own, one in the third on a short run by QB Rory Schoonmaker but the Jackets would miss the point after attempt. That gave Evangel a 19-11 advantage. It would remain that way until the second to last play of the game when Schoonmaker found Tyler Stewart in the back of the endzone cutting the lead to 19-17. The Jackets would need a two point conversion to tie but would come up empty ending the game.

Graceland ends the season at 6-4 overall and will be quickly hitting the recruiting trail retooling for next year.
