The always packed and exciting homecoming didn't disappoint. The Yellowjackets continued their winning ways with a tough 23-15 victory over the Baker Wildcats Saturday afternoon.
Homecoming always is a great time for alumni and students alike, but this was a very special homecoming for the Jackets as they had the honor of dedicating the new "Huntsman Field" to Johnny and Sharon Huntsman themselves. Thanks to their generous donation, Graceland now has a state of the art football field and track facility. "What an incredible donation and dedication to the programs here at Graceland they've shown," Coach Welch said Friday evening in a private honoring ceremony with the Huntsmans. "This tremendous gift allows us to continue building on the foundation that's already been laid," Coach Welch concluded with. The Jackets would not disappoint on homecoming.
The scoring started in the 2nd quarter as Garrett Graves hooked up with Garrett Grundman on a 33 yard touchdown strike putting Graceland up 7-0. Baker would nail a 43 yard field goal at the 4 minute mark before the half and the Jackets took a 7-3 lead into the locker room at half time. In the second half Graceland would get back on the board quickly as running back Jerome Messam scored from 12 yards out to put Graceland up 14-3. Following a Baker turnover, Merf Trout nailed a 53 yard field goal breaking a school record to put the Jackets up 17-3 in what appeared to be a comfortable lead. Baker however would strike twice in short time, once on a 1 yard run (PAT blocked) to make it 17-9 and then again on a 48 yard pass from Wildcat quarterback Mack Brown to receiver James Hensley. Baker would go for two and come up short leaving the score at 17-15 in the Jackets favor. A seesaw field position battle ensued over the next quarter until running back Jerome Messam would fumble on the goal line but Graceland offensive lineman James Blake would pounce on in the endzone for a TD. That put Graceland up 23-15 and that's where the score would end as the Jackets continued their winning ways and ran their record to 4-1 on the season. Next week Graceland travels to Culver Stockton College (Canton, MO) for a 2:00 pm kickoff.
