The Yellowjackets, having to play ranked teams in back to back weeks in the always difficult HAAC, dropped a tough one Saturday night to the #17 ranked Pioneers of Mid-America Nazarene, 30-21. Graceland came into the game 2-0 on the season and fresh off an upset of #3 ranked Mo Valley on the road but Mid-America proved to be too much.
The scoring began in the 1st quarter for the Pioneers as place kicker John Jost drilled a 32 yard field goal to put MANU up 3-0. Following an interception, they would get right back on the board again scoring on a 17 sec. drive capped off by a 6 yard Kendall Addison run. That put the Pioneers up 10-0. On the next play from scrimmage for the Jacket’s, star running back Jerome Messam had a 63 yard run into the end zone to get Graceland on the board and cut the lead to 3 at 10-7. John Jost would hit two more consecutive field goals to make the score 16-7 before Graceland would find pay dirt again on a 23 yard touchdown strike from Graves to Tyler Stewart who has scored in each of the Jacket’s first three games. However, Mid America would also score again before the half as QB Matt Schneider would hook up with running back Kendall Addison on a beautiful 45 yard touchdown mostly on Addison’s great running. MANU would take a 23-14 lead into the locker room at half time. The big blow for the Jacket’s came at the beginning of the second half as Graceland fumbled the opening kickoff and the Pioneers recovered and proceed to go right down the field and score a touchdown on a 17 yard hookup between Schneider and tight end Caleb Harvey. That would be all the Pioneers would need on the night taking a 30-17 lead. Graceland running back Jerome Messam would add another TD for the Jacket’s on a three yard run but that would be how Graceland’s fate would finish Saturday as the Jacket’s fell to nationally ranked Mid America Nazarene 30-21.
