Lamoni, IA-
On a beautiful night for football, the Jackets started the season off on the right note, a 21-13 defeat of the much improved Central Methodist Eagles. The evening began with the honoring of Mr. & Mrs. John & Sharon Huntsman during a ceremonial coin toss. The Huntsman’s, with their generous gift of a new playing surface, have allowed the Yellowjacket football program to continue there rise off the field. The Jackets took their first step up on the field tonight. “I felt we battled hard.” Coach Welch said following the contest. “We are facing more changes in personnel both player wise and coaching wise then we have in any of the previous five years I’ve been here. It’s a beginning, we have a long way to go, but it’s a start. These kids have worked hard all pre-season to get to this point. This is just one step towards the direction we want to go. We’ll get there, but again, it’s going to take a lot more work. Central Methodist put up a great effort tonight and deserves a ton of credit.” Coach Welch concluded with.

The Jackets were lead offensively tonight by newcomer Jerome Messam who rushed for 110 yards on 26 carries and 2 touchdowns. Messam also caught 4 passes for 16 yards. “Central Methodist fought hard but we finished strong. Much of the credit goes to the defense and our “O” line tonight.” Messam said after the game. Quarterback Garrett Graves threw for 135 yards and 1 touchdown on 20-33 passing in his debut. Garrett Grundman led the receiving crew with 6 catches for 61 yards. Tyler Stewart had 4 catches for 34 yards and the only TD through the air tonight.

Defensively the Jackets were led tonight by junior Mark Bickham. Bickham recorded 7 tackles, 4 of which were solo and also blocked a crucial extra point. Other defenders of note: Cameron Willkomm had 8 tackles 2 solo and 6 assists and cornerback James Thomas had an interception. The Jackets, now 1-0, travel to Marshall, Missouri next week to face the #3 ranked Missouri Valley Vikings on what could prove to be a great football game.
