#8 Graceland was in Kansas today to take on the #23 Benedictine Ravens. Needing to win out their final three games in order to secure the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship, Graceland took step two of the three stage process. The Jackets beat rival William Jewell 2-0 Saturday, and today defeated the Ravens 4-1.
Graceland scored twice in the first half, taking a 2-0 half-time lead into the locker room. The Jackets scored on goals by Hunter Re’ (assist Matt Klaus) and Santiago Ricaute (no assist.) Graceland would get on the board twice more in the second half as Eddie Edwards (assist Filip Prostran) found the back of the net as did HAAC offensive player of the week Kevin Souter (assist Filip Prostran.) The Ravens would get a goal of their own on a penalty kick late in the game but other then ending Ortiz’s shutout streak, it would have no effect on the outcome.
The Jacket defense was once again overpowering, and goalie Carlos Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia) played solid. “We played really well today,” Coach Joseph said following the contest. “Playing against a team like Benedictine who is known for their hard work and heart, it’s great to come out and match that intensity and get a win. Brian Loving led the defense that nearly shut out (with the exception of the penalty kick) one of the best offenses in the country,” Joseph concluded with.
The Jackets run their overall record to 15-1-1 and 7-1 in conference play. Graceland finishes out the regular season in Baldwin City, KS Saturday night at 7:00 against Baker University. The winner of Saturday’s contest will be crowned HAAC Champions for 2007.
