The Yellowjackets didn’t seem to miss a beat on Saturday night at “The Razz.” They hosted long time conference rival William Jewell Cardinals. You wouldn’t know it by the way they acted they had suffered their first loss this past Tuesday at Culver-Stockton.
The men were as solid as ever as the whistle blew to start the first half of play. Back and forth both teams went down the field, both controlling the ball with confidence. Not many shots on goal were taken, but you could feel the tension in the air of the rivalry. Their was a very physical element to the game being played on the wet, sloppy field. Neither team seemed to let down as play progressed through the first half. On went play and out came the yellow cards, tension was high. Nobody could score as both teams kept the ball out of scoring range. With only one minute remaining in the half Francisco Seratta(Los Fresnos, TX) put the ball away to give Graceland the lead.
In the second half the Yellowjackets remained as forceful as ever. They continued to push and push the ball harder toward goal, only to come up short as the Cardinal defense deflected their several attempts. On a free kick attempt 35 yards out Kevin Souter(Portsoy, Scotland) would find his mark, kicking the ball just over the goalkeeper’s hands to score the second point. Graceland would not look back as they continued to press more and more. On the other end of the field goalkeeper Carlos Ortiz(Bogota, Columbia) would not allow any shots close to the goal. Ortiz played outstanding in his position shutting down every attempt made. “Carlos showed why he was selected as NAIA Player of the Week. I am very proud of his performance in tonight’s game, he made outstanding decisions and delivered another shut out,” said Coach Ivan Joseph.
Joseph also felt the team held their composure very well considering the number of players that received yellow cards. “Jewell has always been a tough conference rival, the men did well tonight,” he added. The Yellowjackets will travel to Benedictine College next Wednesday to play the Ravens at 4:00pm.
