Homecoming 2008

The official count is in: Homecoming 2008 was the largest ever!

Hosting an inauguration in conjunction with homecoming stretched every department on campus, but we succeeded with flying colors according to the comments of our guests. At the tailgate party Sodexo served over 1,824 meals to our students and visitors. Other head-counts we can document show that they served 412 honor class meals and 530 banquet meals (Friday night and Sunday). Sodexo also served an inauguration luncheon for over 191 followed by a beautiful post-inauguration reception for over 700. Quite a weekend! More cars than ever were parked on the Gunsolley/Graybill grass. More scholarship money was raised at the silent auction. More people heard The Fabulous Morticians and Family Fat. More people attended the homecoming play. And more people said it was the best homecoming ever!

Thanks to all the departments who worked many hours to make the inauguration/homecoming happen. Facility Services, Sodexo, MSC, Athletics, Fine Arts & Theatre, Institutional Advancement, the President's Office, and the Inauguration Planning Committee probably invested the most time, but we understand that many of you were also behind the scenes making things happen. Faculty members who presented at the Academic Symposium spent many hours preparing for their talks. Friends and former employees of the University also pitched in to help. We are extremely grateful for every effort you put forth on behalf of our visitors. Special thanks go to Jodi Seymour, the Inauguration Planning Committee co-chair, who made the academic symposium and inauguration ceremony run flawlessly. And, as always, words cannot express enough appreciation for all the work Beth Heltenberg did to make the weekend perfect. Her entire family pitched in this year.

We at Graceland understand the real meaning of "it takes a village..." Thanks to all the members of the GU village for a spectacular weekend. With deep gratitude,

Homecoming 2008 contest winners!

The Alumni Programs Office is pleased to announce this year's winning Homecoming theme. The homecoming committee had 44 submissions to choose from and, as usual, it was a difficult choice. But in their wisdom the committee decided to merge two great submissions into one theme: "Great Moments-Memories and Destinations."

Professor of Sociology William Norman submitted "Great Moments" and faculty emeritus Howard Booth submitted the theme "Memories and Destinations." We appreciate the time and thought that all the people who entered the contest put into their ideas, especially since this year the theme will also guide the inauguration activities.

Again, thanks to the entire campus for the ideas submitted. And congratulations, Bill and Howard!
