Shawnna Jackson, MSN, RN, PHNA-BC, is an Assistant Professor of Nursing for Graceland University’s School of Nursing. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Graceland in 1998 and worked for four years in acute care before finding public health.
After some time in public health, Shawnna completed the Field Epidemiology Certificate program from the University of North Carolina, increasing her knowledge of infectious disease, disease surveillance, outbreak investigations and research methods. In May 2010, she earned a Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis in public health from the University of Missouri. Her interests and the focus of much of her graduate work include Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria and acellular Pertussis) vaccination promotion among postpartum mothers and contacts with infants, and increasing influenza vaccination rates among healthcare workers.
In 2011, Shawnna achieved her Advanced Public Health Nurse – Board Certification (PHNA-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Shawnna has past experience in medical surgical, pediatric and public health nursing. Most of her nursing career she has served as the public health manager at a local health department. She oversees all communicable disease activities, including investigations, reporting and education, immunization clinics, and school health and wellness classes. She has been with the health department for the last 16 years in various management roles, her responsibilities including outbreak and disease investigations, emergency preparedness, immunization promotion, policy change and development, program evaluation, budget, and community and staff education.
Shawnna currently teaches several courses in the RN to BSN program as well as Community Health and Senior Capstone in the on-campus BSN program.
Shawnna and her husband love to do things outdoors with their ten-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter like hiking, picnics and just playing. Every single day is an adventure.
