Financial Aid Basics for Transfer and Non-traditional Students

"How will I finance my college education?" is an important and critical question to ask when making your college choice. Graceland understands that you want a quality education at an affordable price. We're here to help you explore how to make that possible. We've indicated below the steps you need to follow.

Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the academic year you plan to attend. This is necessary to qualify for federal and state grants and loans and Graceland need-based aid. To apply on-line, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. Add Graceland's code - 001866.

Apply and be accepted to Graceland University. The materials you submit for acceptance will give us the information we need to determine your qualifications for the scholarships and grants that are awarded automatically.

Apply for Graceland University scholarships and grants. Scholarships and grants such as Academic, Phi Theta Kappa, Honors Program and Graceland's need-based grant are based on established criteria and awarded automatically when we have receive the required information. Merit grants such as the Prestigious Honors, fine arts and athletics, require auditioning and/or interviews. The enclosed list of "Graceland University Grants and Scholarships" should be helpful. You can also visit www.graceland.edu/scholarships for application forms and additional information.

Apply for outside scholarships and grants. Research what's available in your community, with your church, with professional organizations, at your college and high school, and through on-line scholarship searches. Great places to begin your search are www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov and www.fastweb.com.

Transfer Academic Scholarships are available to full-time students. Scholarships are for transfer students with 12 or more college credits with a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 to 4.0. Award amounts up to $7,000 per academic year.

Performance Grants in Fine Arts-Music, Art & Theatre: Variable amounts based on evaluation of skill. By audition (live or recorded) only. Application Deadline preferred March 1

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship: A renewable scholarship. A minimum 3.5 GPA and 24 credit hours are required. Award value is a net $1,000 above the rest of your financial aid package.

Honors Scholarships: for outstanding academic achievement, renewable for four years. Award amounts up to $1,000.

Congregational Matching Grants: Up to $1500 per year, to be divided between semesters. Graceland will match a tuition grant from any church. Application deadline: July 1. Funding deadline: August 1.

Performance Grants in Athletics: Variable amounts based on evaluation of skill.

Alumni Endowed Scholarship. See application for details. Application deadline: March 1.*

Athletic Training Scholarship: Award amounts up to $2,000. Must be an Athletic Training major.

Federal Pell Grant: $4731 maximum, must demonstrate exceptional need.

FSEOG: $1700 maximum. Federal Supplemental Grant, must demonstrate exceptional need.

Federal Work Study: Awarded up to $1700. Based on need; must be enrolled at least half time. The student is paid on a monthly basis for hours worked during that pay period.

Federal Perkins Loan: $2500 maximum in any year. Full-time student; must demonstrate exceptional need.

Federal Direct Student Loan: Variable amount. Includes both subsidized (need based) and unsubsidized (available regardless of need) loans. Additional unsubsidized funds are possible  for independent students and for dependent students whose parents are unable to qualify for the PLUS loan.

PLUS Loan: Variable amount. Dependent students. Available to parents & guardians (credit check required) at fixed 7.9%. Repayment begins 60 days after disbursement...

Iowa Tuition Grant: $4000 (subject to change per legislation). For Iowa residents attending Iowa private colleges. Need-based.
