Piano Proficiency: All music majors must show evidence of piano proficiency. The course MUSC2120 Piano Class for Proficiency (1 s.h.) is designed to aid students who need further study to do so and may be repeated for credit. The piano proficiency exam judges 5 skills: major and relative minor scales up to 4# and 4b keys played in 16th notes with both hands for 4-octaves, prepared hymn of student's choice, one standard polyphonic composition of faculty's choice prepared in advance, one easy accompaniment to be sight-read and a given melody to be provided which can be harmonized, using only primary triads, as well as transposed into other keys containing up to 4# or 4b. The exam, given by keyboard faculty members toward the end of each semester, must be first attempted no later than the fourth semester of the student's enrollment. If all skills are not passed in one sitting, only the unsuccessful skills will be re-tested.
