Practice Facilities

Practice Rooms
Part of improving your musicianship is time spent on PRACTICE!!!! That's why The Shaw Center houses sound-proof practice rooms that include pianos, full-length mirrors, music stands and chairs. Other rooms supply grand pianos and  the organ. There's also a waiting area nearby to ensure you're the next in line to use a room. We want you to succeed and perform to the best of your ability!

We encourage students to schedule practices in the performance venue of choice as well, especially as performance day draws near. Scheduling requests are easily completed on-line through the campus VEMS program.

Piano Lab
Our state-of-the-art piano lab consists of 4 stations. Each station includes 2 RolandHP-2 Digital pianos with 2 iMac 7.1 computers, 2 sets of AKG K-44 stereo headsets, and an Edirol Studio Canvas SD-20 MIDI Module. In addition, there is a Roland KR-577 Digital Intelligent Piano with an iMac and headphones. The Lab contains 1 hp LaserJet 4200/3400 series laser printer. Programs used are Band-in-a-Box, Finale, NAXOS, Grout Online, Grove Online, ePortfolio, SmartMusic and Makemusic.

Performance Facilities

The Shaw Center for Performing Arts Auditorium
Most concerts and events take place on this stage. The auditorium seats about 800 people. A full scale lighting and sound board is managed from a room above to provide professional technical support. For recitals done on a smaller scale, the auditorium offers a divider towards the back to form a smaller performance or classroom setting, known as room 167.

Cheville Chapel
Sometimes recitals are performed in the campus chapel, when it's available, to offer a variation of setting.

New Addition
We are thrilled that plans for an enlargement of The Shaw Center are moving forward. The blueprints now on display include an impressive, redesigned entrance; we eagerly await the new "black box" theatre, music recital hall, recording studio, rearranged classrooms and office spaces. Another highlight will be the addition of an outdoor stage facing the Administration Building. Removal of the parking lot will unify and beautify our central campus. The remodeled building will be stunning and provide easier access to the auditorium - no more icy steps down to the front doors!  The construction will mean some temporary inconvenience- already the Theatre Department is getting creative about different locations for next year's Homecoming play- but the reward is well worth the effort.
*Please be aware that current plans are subject to change; the final product may not match the linked diagrams exactly. We will post updates periodically and as needed.*
