1962 David O. "Dave" Allen served in the Navy from 1955-59 as an electronics crew chief aboard one of the giant WV-2 Super Constellation ("SuperConnies") surveillance aircraft. He and the 23-man crew flew between Midway Island to the Aleutian Islands on a regular basis as part of the Airborne Early Warning System. "We were the forerunner of the AWACs aircraft," according to Dave. He logged more than 2,000 hours in the air. Based on Midway, the flight to the Aleutians took between 10-14 hours roundtrip. There wasn't much to do on remote, tiny Midway Island. "We swam a lot," he said. He lives in Lamoni, IA. (lamonipx@grm.net) Jerry Thomas served in the Marine Corps from 1957-60.
