1951 David Porter served in the Army from 1952-54, in infantry training in Germany and France. He was stationed in "converted stables" at Fontainebleau Chateau, outside Paris. He did administrative work at HQ - his group worked with the big C-124 Globemaster transport aircraft which could carry tanks and other heavy equipment to Japan and on to Korean War bases. He worked with an engineering group, traveling to and from the front lines, inspecting road and bridge equipment, ordering repairs when necessary. "I was lucky. I never shot at anybody and nobody ever shot at me." He lives in Traverse City, MI. (231-929-0041) Jack E. Stone served in the Army as a communications specialist from 1951-53. Moving around frequently with an infantry regiment during the Korean War he helped lay field communications wire and set up communications bunkers. He lives in Plymouth Meeting, PA. (610-828-1221) John B. Studdard served in the Army in the Korean War from 1952-54, assigned to an airbase at Suwon, Korea, as personnel clerk, gun crewman and radio/telephone operator. He lives in Lawrence, KS. (785-843-5865) Lenza "Darrell" Walker served in the Air Force from 1951-74 and was stationed at many bases all over the world. He worked in air-to-ground, communications equipment repair, ensuring that flight crews could talk to ground crews. In Vietnam, serving as a radio operator, he experienced the TET Offensive when he says, "things were really poppin' during that one." Back in the U.S. he worked with the NORAD early-warning system, tracking missiles from a base in Colorado Springs, CO. He lives in Springerton, IL. (618-963-2682) |
