1948 William "Bill" Baber served three years in the Navy submarine service in the South Pacific during World War II, from 1943-46. He was a radar and radioman on the attack submarine Don Booz served in Navy from 1944-46 in amphibious forces. He was stationed at Little Creek, VA (near Norfolk) and Green Core Springs Naval Station, near Jacksonville, FL. Besides his regular assignments, Don was a good baseball player and participated on the official base teams. (gbooz3@comcast.net) Irl L. Chandler served in the Army during the Korean War from 1950-52, serving with the 28th Infantry Division, assigned to Battalion HQ, as an Operation Specialist stationed in Heilbrun, Germany. Irl had the unique opportunity to organize Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops around Europe. When he was inducted into the military he was working for the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Executive. He helped establish the first EUCOM Boy Scout Camp located on Lake Alatsee, Feesen, Germany at the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. He lives in Kirksville, MO. (chandleri@missouri.edu) Laurayne (Norris) Galusha served in the Army Air Force from 1944-46. She did her basic training at Ft. Des Moines in Des Moines, IA, and then was stationed at Minter Field near Bakersfield, CA. She worked repairing film projection machines. Twice she was set to go overseas but says, Truman believed women should not serve overseas. Later, she was scheduled to go, but the war ended. She completed her service at a base near Harrisburg, Pa, processing GIs returning home from the war. She lives in Lamoni, IA. ((641-784-8646)) Philip D. "Phil" Garrett served in the Navy from 1944-46, part of that time as a sonar man on board the attack personnel destroyer USS Walter B. Cobb. It was Phil's job to send out "sound watch signals," wait for echoes and then try to distinguish if the echo was an enemy submarine. He lives in Gillespie, IL. (217-839-2812) Curtis W. Heaviland served in the Navy during World War II, much of the time aboard the destroyer escort Arthur L. Horner served in the Army during WW II. On the day Horizons called the Horner residence to talk with Arthur about his service, we learned he had passed away that morning - November 7, 2005. Arthur worked with the U.S. Postal Service in New York City in conjunction with the Army, during WW II. He was also stationed in the Philippines, identifying and gathering information about fatalities. He resided in Boise, ID. We offer sincere condolences to Arthur's family and our thanks for providing information so he could be included in this project. Lahoma Alice Russell served during WW II in the Women's Army Corps, from 1944-46, assigned to Air Transport Command. She trained at Des Moines, IA and worked at Rosecrans Field, St. Joseph, MO, and Love Field, Dallas, TX as a teletype operator. (larussell@cox.net) Paul E. Teeter served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot and trainer. He was stationed primarily at Randolph Field, San Antonio and instructed young pilots with the dual-control AT-6 aircraft. He came right out of high school into the Aviation Cadet Program. Paul resides in Lees Summit, MO. (816-478-6190) Daniel Waite served in the Air Force from 1943-45, as a radio operator on C-54 cargo aircraft. His crew transported equipment to bases in Alaska where it was picked up by Russian air crews - part of the "lend-lease" agreement between the U.S. and Russia. Later, his crew helped supply units testing military equipment under extreme weather conditions in northern Canada. He lives in Lee's Summit, MO. (816-478-8206) |
