1942 William E. Anderson served in the Army Medical Corps from 1942-45. He was stationed in England and France and worked as his unit's payroll clerk. His unit helped "patch up" those wounded during the D-Day invasion. He was on board a ship, prepared to leave for the war in the Pacific when "the bomb was dropped and I got to go home." He lives in Independence, MO. (816-254-5797) David B. Carmichael served for more than 30 years with the Navy - on active duty during the Korean War and other postings, and many active and inactive reserve postings. He served as an internist at the U.S. hospital at Yokoska, Japan and as Chief of Medicine aboard the USS Repose. Later, he became Inspector General of the Medical Corps Reserve and spent seven years as one of four Navy senior medical reserve officers. He lives in La Jolla, CA. (ascdbc@aol.com) William Van Fleet served in the Coast Guard from 1942-45. He lives in Independence, MO. (816-836-8112) Rudolph L. Leutzinger served in the Navy from 1944-46. He was an electronic technician aboard the attack transport USS Valencia. His ship was scheduled to be part of the invasion of Japan and was in port in San Francisco when Japan surrendered. He remembers a "chaotic melee" on Market Street of those celebrating the surrender. The Valencia was one of the first ships to arrive in Japan. Rudolph was responsible for maintaining radar, transmitting and receiving equipment and sonar equipment on board his ship. He lives in Independence, MO. (816-252-5036) |
