Honorary Degree Nomination

Article Body

This is a call for nominations for Honorary Degrees. The purpose of conferring an honorary degree is threefold: (1) it honors a deserving person who has made a distinguished contribution to society; (2) it honors Graceland in that such a person became associated with our cause and our university; and (3) it demonstrates to our students and our friends the qualities of life which we admire and try to cultivate in our students.

A person honored by Graceland should be one who has made a distinguished contribution to society, and (1) exemplifies the qualities of thought and creative activity which we associate with scholarship and love of learning; or (2) exemplifies the qualities of personal character which we associate with the mission and purpose of the university; or (3) have some natural contact or association with Graceland through church, students, alumni, Board of Trustees, etc. Employees, members of the Alumni Board, or members of the Board of Trustees are not eligible for Honorary Degrees while they are associated with Graceland in these official capacities. Honorary degrees are conferred by the Board of Trustees, but shall carry the endorsement of faculty.

Nomination of candidates for honorary degrees may come from students, staff, faculty, the administration, the alumni, or the Board of Trustees. Please submit nominations, with supporting rationale, to Steve Anders, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, by October 31.
