On Tuesday, October 13 our first confirmed case of the H1N1 flu was reported. Since Tuesday, three additional students have tested positive for H1N1. A number of other students are showing flu like symptoms, but are testing negative. Bottom line, we have a lot of sick students. A typical case of H1N1 flu results in 5 - 7 days of loss class attendance. We are asking faculty to consider a liberal attendance policy because we want to encourage students with flu like symptoms to stay home or in their residence hall rooms. Faculty are encouraged to ask students to leave class and go to Health Services if they exhibit flu like symptoms (cough, fever).
Housekeeping has increased efforts to disinfect heavy traffic areas, focusing on doorknobs, handrails and other high touch surfaces. Facility Services has distributed hand sanitizers and disinfecting wipes to help prevent or control the spread of the flu.
Resident students can have meals picked up for them from food service.
Take Common-Sense Precautions
As H1N1 flu concerns continue, common-sense precautions remain the best way of reducing the threat from flu and other infections:
- First and foremost, if you are sick, stay home and limit contact with others until 24 hours after your symptoms go away.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away.
- Cough into your elbow instead of your hand if you don't have a tissue.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Use alcohol-based hand cleaners when available.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you are sick and need to see a healthcare provider, call the healthcare provider's office first for any special instructions.
