If you want to learn effective ways to search for information, you might consider signing up for Computer Based Academic Research (CSIT1050) This is a 1 credit class which is offered every quarter (twice each semester) We meet on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:00-2:50 p.m.
Freshman students are especially encouraged to enroll; this course is designed to help you be effective researchers and users of information sources throughout your college career.
In this class, we cover a wide range of topics, including:
- Effective searching for books in library catalogs and book databases
- Searching for, and within online books and documents
- Searching for journal, magazine, and newspaper articles
- Effective use of a variety of Internet search engines
- Advanced searching in Google using the large number of specialized Google search tools
- Using online tools to create bibliographic citations in MLA, APA and other formats
- Finding primary sources in databases of historical documents
- Using online reference resources
- Using useful consumer resources to find such things as product reviews, employment, housing, etc
- Identifying and using news and media resources
